FHAO #2: “Little Things are Big” Discussion Questions

* = Questions to answer in writing

“Negro” – regular term used for an African American through the 1960s
Valise – a suitcase
Slander – negative things said about a person or a group
Chauvinism – attitude of superiority of one group over another

1. What dilemma does Jesus Colon face? What risks does he perceive if he tries to help the woman? Why?

2. Colon talks about labels that society placed on him. How did those labels shape the way he perceived his choices? How did those labels shape the decision he made?

*3. Why does he have regrets? What does he mean when he says he “buried his courtesy” that morning? What is the significance of that loss?

*4. Relate this to the title of the essay: “Little Things are Big” – what does this mean? Give a historical example of how this can be true.

5. Who is the victim in this story? – (Colon, the woman, or the larger society?)

6. How might this story have ended differently? What might have happened if he’d made a different choice?

*7. HW: make an identity chart for yourself; Answer this question: How do the labels you placed on the chart shape how you perceive the world and your place in it? How do they shape the decisions you make? Talk about at least 3 of the labels you use. Write this on the back of your chart.
(Use the plain white paper handed out in class for your chart).
Due Monday 8-15-11.
